Have questions regarding Peregrine Exams? This article will contain some commonly asked questions and useful information.

How do I set up a Peregrine Exam?

  • Peregrine Exams are set up directly on Moodle. Please see the following guide for information regarding adding it to your course and setting up your gradebook

https://kputlcommons.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/43000646390-how-to-add-and-setup-peregrine-exams-in-your-course

How do my students start their exam?

  • Your Peregrine Client Advisor will provide you with anonymous activation codes to distribute to your students. They will need to enter the code they are given in order to begin their attempt of the exam.

What information do students need to provide in order to start their exam?

  • Peregrine does not store any personal information of students. When an exam attempt is started, your students will be asked to enter their unique activation code provided by a Peregrine Client Advisor to you, to be distributed among your students.
  • As Peregrine does not know which student is assigned to which activation code, you will need to keep track of this information.

What are the timing and navigation restrictions for students?

  • Students will have 3 minutes to complete each question.
  • They are provided two 15 minute breaks to stop their timer during the exam. The exam will automatically resume after the 15 minute period is over.
  • If a student does not click Record Answer before the time limit runs out on a question, their answer will not be recorded.
  • They cannot return to a previously answered or skipped question.
  • They will have 48 hours allocated to complete the exam, from the time they begin it. You can cut this time shorter by simply hiding the exam from them if needed. This time limit can be extended or shortened by request with Peregrine as well.
  • They are given 3 login attempts. This means that if they are disconnected or log out of their account, they can still sign back in and continue their exam a few more times.

(Important Note: Once an exam attempt has started, nothing will stop the allotted exam timer (48 hours or whichever timing was specified). For example, this means a student could complete part of the exam and log off for a night. The next morning they can use one of their remaining login attempts to continue the exam, however their 48 hours will have continued to count down as they were logged out.

Before they exit the exam, they must complete the question they are on and record the answer. When they return, the exam will start at the next question. The 3 minutes/question will never pause.)

If I schedule an exam for a specific date range, will students be able to continue their exam after the scheduled 48 hours if they start late?

  • Peregrine exams are always active as long as they're accessible on Moodle. If you plan to close your exam on March 1st at 11:00pm, it would need to be closed/hidden by you at that time (Best done with Moodle activity restrictions). A student could start their exam at 11:00pm and still have 48 hours unless the exam is made inaccessible.

  • If the average time taken to complete an exam is 2 hours, students will need to start their attempt at least 2 hours before the scheduled end of the exam to complete it.

Is there a cost for students?

  • There is currently no cost to students for taking the exam.

What format is the exam taken in? - (Computer labs on campus, online at the student's home, etc.)

  • The exam is completed through Moodle so you can designate a window that they can do the exam remotely, or schedule a lab on campus to complete it in.

Is Proctoring software available if the exam is taken remotely outside of campus?

  • Proctoring software is not available, however there are some additional security measures involved: All questions are randomized so no two students will receive the same questions.

  • There is a 3 min limit per question.  If students navigate away from the active screen they receive a warning message that the time they are away from the active screen is being timed and recorded. Any time spent away from the exam screen will be reported alongside the student's exam results on Peregrine's site.

Can students view their score or answers after completing an exam?

  • After completing the assessment exam, your students will be asked to view and save their completion certificate. This certificate will generate in PDF format and will show the score they received on the exam. Individual answers will not be shown to students.

What is the question structure of the exam?

  • All questions are multiple-choice.

Is there any special setup, downloads, apps, etc. required?

  • The exam is completely done through Moodle, no additional setup or software is required from the student.

Is the exam supported on Mobile platforms such as phones?

  • Peregrine currently does not support exams on mobile devices

How do I grade a Peregrine Exam

  • With the exception of a participation grade, Peregrine Assessment exam grades will automatically be pushed to Moodle and populate into your gradebook. A limitation of Peregrine is that you won’t be able to see student's individual answers, however.

What format is the grade provided in?

  • The grade provided by Peregrine indicates the percentage of correct answers, not the percentile. This percentage will populate into the Moodle gradebook automatically.

How should I weigh Peregrine Assessment Exams in my course?

  • It is not recommended to weight a Peregrine exam any higher than 10% of a student's overall grade. This setup article covers the setup needed to adjust the gradebook entry of Peregrine to 10%, or 5% completion and 5% participation grade split.

Is there a breakdown of the exam makeup?

Are there any suggestions for best practices in an online exam format such as this?

  • Allow a wider time for starting/completing the exam. This is for cases where some students may not be in the same time zone which can create some difficulty or confusion in starting on time.
  • Students will naturally be a bit stressed when taking an exam, being accessible to them whether by phone, email, or zoom, can go a long way.
  • Students may not be familiar with online exam formats, less so for an exam such as this, so you will want to be very clear and specific with instructions for students.
  • Encourage academic integrity – This can be done by asking students to complete KPU’s academic integrity course modules and earning their academic integrity badge, as well as fostering an environment built on this. (More information can be found here)
  • Plan for any technical issues – This one may be a bit more easier said than done as this particular exam is not being hosted by KPU, so the range of assistance we can provide for some issues is limited. With that said, you may want to anticipate that there could be cases where students may be unable to complete the exam.
