Peregrine exams are added on an individual course level and do contain a minimal level of Moodle configuration. This guide will cover the steps needed to add and set up an exam within your course.

Adding an Exam Module

Peregrine exams are set up through individual activity links. In Moodle, these are called "External Tool" modules. The process to add these modules to your course can only be done by Moodle administrators.

  • Once your service ticket has been completed, you'll see the Peregrine Assessment Exam module in your course.

  • At this point, if you try to access the exam module you will see an error similar to the screenshot posted below. This is completely normal for a new assessment module and occurs because it is not yet tied to a specific exam.

A Peregrine Client Advisor will need to provide you with a unique exam URL to link to your module. When you receive this URL, you can begin the steps to link it to your exam below:

Setting up the Exam Module

  • Once you have obtained an exam URL from a Peregrine Client Advisor, click the exam module in your course and edit the module settings by clicking the gear icon on the right, then selecting "Edit Settings".

  • Ensure the Preconfigured Tool option is set to Automatic, based on the tool URL

  •  In Tool URL box, remove the URL that is already in the box and enter the exam URL provided by your Peregrine Client Advisor. This URL will be unique to the exam itself.

  • Under the Grade tab, you can determine whether the exam is worth marks in your gradebook. Due to the setup of an exam on Peregrine's end, it is recommended the Maximum Grade is left at 100

(Note: Additional instructions have been created in order to customize your gradebook weightage to accommodate the Peregrine exam. They can be found in the next section below)

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save and Return to Course"

Setting up the Gradebook

It is not recommended to weight a Peregrine exam any higher than 10% of a student's overall grade. This section will cover the setup needed to adjust the gradebook entry of Peregrine to 10%, or 5% completion and 5% participation grade split.

  • Click the gear icon on the main page of your course and select the Gradebook Setup option from the list.

  • In your gradebook setup you'll find the Peregrine Assessment Exam that you previously set up. Click the Checkbox next to the weightage, and enter 10 to weigh it as 10% of the students overall grades. Ensure the rest of your gradebook now adds up to 100 or adjust it as needed, then click Save changes at the bottom of the gradebook.

(IMPORTANT Note: Your gradebook weights MUST total to 100. If they do not, Moodle will automatically adjust the weights of activities in your course in order to reach this. This should not be confused with the Maximum grade, which is a sum of all the marks available in a course.)

  • Save your changes when finished.

Setting up a 5%/5% Participation and Completion Grade

  • To split your Peregrine assessment exam grades between completion and participation (A 5% + 5% split), you will need to add a manually graded item to your gradebook to use as a gradable participation activity.

  • In your gradebook setup, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Add a grade item".

  • Change the Item name to "Peregrine Participation" or something similar to indicate the purpose of the grade.

  • You can leave the Maximum grade at 100. This is the mark you'll be giving your students for their participation.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes when finished.

  • Once both the Peregrine Assessment Exam and Peregrine Participation activity are in your gradebook setup, change their respective weights to 5 each.

(IMPORTANT Note: As mentioned above, your gradebook weights MUST total to 100. If they do not, Moodle will automatically adjust the weights of activities in your course in order to reach this. This should not be confused with the Maximum grade, which is a sum of all the marks available in a course.)

  • Save your changes when finished.

Attempting the Exam

  • Your Peregrine Client Advisor will provide you with anonymous activation codes to provide to your students. They will need to enter the code they are given in order to begin their attempt of the exam.
