This guide is for courses that have badges. Course completion in Moodle allows instructors and students to track progress in a course to determine whether or not the course is complete. Once all requirements are met, the student will be awarded a badge.

Setting up Course Completion

  • Open the badging course where you want to enable the Course Completion feature.

  • Select Edit Settings from the gear icon on the right side of the page.

  • Expand the option Completion tracking and select Yes.

Setting up Activity Completion

Now each activity that will be used as criteria to earn the badge will need to be tracked by Moodle. The following steps will enable this tracking.

From here, tracking is set up based on the type of activity For example:

  • Graded Quizzes/Assignments
  • View-only content such as videos or pages

Setting up your Quizzes for Activity Completion

You will first need to setup Grade to pass in your quizzes. Without a specified Grade to pass Moodle will not be able to determine whether a quiz should be marked as completed.

  • On the course page, click Turn editing on.

  • Find your quiz and click Edit and then Edit Settings.

  • under the Grade section, make sure that you fill in the Grade to pass with the minimum grade you would like a student to earn to consider this quiz

  • Click Save and Display to continue to the Quiz.

Now that the Grade to Pass is configured, we need to ensure the quiz is worth the correct total of marks.

  • From the Quiz page, click the Cog icon on the top right and click Edit quiz.

  • Now on the right side of the page make sure that the Maximum grade is correct.
  • Click Save.

Now that your grades are setup correctly, we need to configure the completion of this quiz as a tracking requirement

  • Move back into your quiz, and click Edit Settings once more
  •  Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and expand the Activity Completion heading.

  • Enable the option to "Show activity as complete when conditions are met"
  • Ensure "Student Must receive a grade to complete this activity" is enabled
  • Ensure "Require Passing Grade is enabled.

  • You can now click save and display button and do this for all of the quizzes/graded activities that you would require completion for.

Now the quiz will be tracked for completion. A badge can be tied to a successful completion of this quiz, or a series of activities. When a student completes the specified criteria, the badge will automatically be awarded.

Activity Completion for Modules

Modules are content that only needs to be viewed by the student. Use this setting for content that you want students to view to complete.

  • Go into the activity that needs to be viewed in order to be marked as complete.
  • Scroll down to the Activity Completion heading and enable the "Show activity as complete when conditions are met" option

  • For view-only modules, enable student must view this activity to complete it checkbox.

Now this activity only needs to be clicked on/viewed by a student in order to be marked as complete. This can be used alongside graded activities to award a badge, or on its own.

Once all of the modules that you would like to use as a criteria to earn a digital badge have been set up for tracking, it will then be ready to be linked to a badge. Please reach out to your digital badging contact to complete the process for linking your badge.
