This article will guide the user through backing up from courses.kpu.ca and restoring to courses.moodle.kpu.ca and trades.moodle.kpu.ca. For continue.moodle.kpu.ca, please use this article. 



Backing up a course on courses.kpu.ca


By backing up a course, the instructor can save a copy of their course to a file. This allows the instructor to download a copy of that file to their device.


  • Click the gear icon near the top-right of the page.
  • Choose a backup.

  • Keeping everything: If you are wanting to keep everything from your course click jump to final step.
  • Wanting to remove items: Uncheck the items that you would not want and click next.



  • If you click next you will be guided to the following page. Here you can select activities to backup. This can be nice if you are not wanting certain activities anymore.
  • When you are done scroll down and click next.




Confirm & review


  • The next page is important because it is a summary of everything that is either getting backed up or not. Please take a moment to review this page before continuing. 



  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click perform backup.

Confirm backup is complete & download the file

  • Confirm that the backup was successful and click continue.


  • Once the download is complete to find your file look under user private backup area.
  • There are five labels, filename, time, size, download & restore.
  • You can tell which one is the most current by looking under time.
  • Look at the filename and it will give you the course name and section number closer to the right of the name. 
  • Once you have found your desired course click download.



Restoring a course on courses.moodle.kpu.ca & trades.moodle.kpu.ca


Restoring a file involves copying the backup file that was downloaded over to the new course. This allows the instructor to copy over any course material into a new Moodle course page.


  • Upload the file by either dragging the file into the box or clicking choose a file.
  • Once the file is uploaded click restore.

  • The next page is important because here you will need to check to see what exactly is being restored. Please take a moment to review this page before continuing.



  • Click continue once all information has been reviewed.


Restore into This Course


You are now presented with two options:


  • First option: The merge option combines both existing content and content from the file.

  • Second option: The delete option only keeps the contents of the file.



Review Settings 


  • Keep the default options and click next.



Review schema


  • Leave the settings at default and click next.



Final review


  • Review all information carefully to make sure that all settings are correct and click perform restore



Complete

  • Click continue and your course will have been restored.
