You can categorize students into different groups and create as many groups as you want in your course, but how will a Moodle activity distinguish which groups are part of this activity? We do this by using grouping. In grouping, you can include all of the differentiated groups for that activity. For example, In the below article, when creating a group assignment, we will create four groups, all of which will be kept in a single grouping so that in the assignment we can choose which grouping to use.

Creating Groups

1. Navigate to the course where you want to form a group

2. Click the Gear icon located on the header

3. Next, select Groups under User links

4. Press the button Create group to create a new group

5. In the new window, type in the name of the group and click on Save Changes. Create as many groups as necessary

6. Now, from the window pane, select the group to which you want to add students and click on Add/remove users button

7. Choose the student you want to add to the group and press the Add button. A single group can have as many students as you want. Once the students are added in the group click on Back to groups button

8. Once all of the desired students have been assigned to desired group, create a grouping
