To assign a specific assignment to a group of students in Moodle, use the Group assignment option. Groups are especially useful for activities in which students interact with one another because they allow students to collaborate on a single assignment. When grading, the teacher can either assign a single grade and provide same feedback to the entire group or assign individual grades and feedback to each group member.


1. Please click on the button Turn Editing On on your Moodle course page


2. Then click on +Add an Activity or Resource


3. Then select Assignment


4. Now fill in all of the fields based on your needs


5. For enabling group submission, expand Group submission settings 

  • Student submit if groups: Select "Yes"
  • Require group to make submission
    • If "Yes," only students who have been assigned to a group will be able to submit 

                    Note: All students must be assigned to a group, Please refer to this article for Creating Groups and Grouping in Moodle

  • Require all group members submit
    • If "Yes," only one submission will be made, but each member of the group must individually click the submit button.
    • If "No," only one submission will be made, and any one group member can submit.
  • Grouping for student groups: From the drop down menu, choose the grouping that should be used for this assignment submission

 Note: Required grouping must be selected from the drop down menu


6. Now click on the Save and Display button
