Open forum works like messaging systems that student can use every day on the web and their mobile devices.

Open forums include a number of extra features, such as the ability to subscribe to individual threads, private replies, and the option to allow anonymous posting, as well as all of the features found in standard Moodle forums. Follow the steps below to add an open forum in your course:

1. On the top right of your course, click Edit mode button.

Edit mode is fixed to the top-right corner of your browser

2. At the bottom of the desired section, click Add an activity or resource.

At the end of each section, "add an activity or resource" will appear with edit mode turned on.

3. From the activity or resource picker, search for Forum and select Open Forum.

A new box will pop-up after clicking the add an activity or resource button.

4. From the Post options section, select ANY or ALL of the following. Descriptions for the options can be found below.

Post options is the second section in open forum settings with five options to choose from.

5.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and display.

Save and Display is a red button at the bottom of the settings page.

Make Forum post Anonymous

If an instructor wants every post in the forum to conceal the identity of the student who made the post, they can make the forum post anonymous.

Allow Private Replies

If the instructor wishes to respond to a forum post privately, this feature should be enabled so that the response is only visible to the original post's student. Once this feature is enabled, instructors will see a Private Reply option on every post, which they can check to reply privately.

Allow Marking as substantive

After checking this option, the instructor can mark any post as substantive by flagging the desired post.

Allow Post Bookmarking

The instructor can use this feature to bookmark any post.

Display Word Count

This setting determines whether or not the post's word count should be displayed.
