Students must provide consent before using the Hypothesis activity. This guide will provide instructions for adding the consent notice to your course, and using it to restrict access to Hypothesis.

The Hypothesis consent notice is placed in a standard Moodle quiz. When a student provides consent in this quiz, they will receive 100%. The Hypothesis activity will be restricted to users who do not receive 100% in order to prevent those who do not provide consent from accessing it.

Adding the Consent Notice

  • The quiz containing the consent form is attached as a file at the bottom of this article. Please click and download it to your device.

  • Enter the course you would like to place the consent form in, then click the Gear icon in the top right corner of the course.

  • From the drop-down menu, click Restore.

  • Drag and drop the quiz file that was downloaded previously into the restore box, then click "Restore"

  • On the Confirm step, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue"

  • From the "Restore into an existing course" page, select the course you would like to place the quiz in and click "Continue"

  • From the settings page, scroll to the bottom and click "Next"

  • The Schema page will confirm the contents of the file you are uploading. Ensure that the Hypothesis Consent quiz is listed and click "Next"

  • Finally, on the "Review" page, scroll to the bottom and click "Restore"

  • Once the restore is complete, click "Continue" and ensure the quiz is now located in your course.

You can now begin to add Hypothesis activities to your course and restrict access based on the grade received in the Hypothesis Consent quiz. The next section will cover how to add the activity and set up restrictions.

Adding a Hypothesis Activity

With the consent form added to your course, you can now begin adding Hypothesis activities.

  • Start by turning editing on, then click "Add an activity or resource"  in the section you would like to add the activity to.

  • From the list of activities, click "External Tool" and add it to your course.

  • You can set the Activity Name to anything you'd like, this is what students would see and click on to access the activity.

  • Click the option for "Preconfigured Tool" to open a drop-down menu. From this menu, click the "Hypothesis" option.

  • Scroll down to the "Restrictions" heading and click on it.

  • Click "Add Restriction". From the options available, click "Grade" to set up a restriction based on the grade received from the consent form.

(Note: While it is basing the restriction off of a grade, the quiz itself should automatically be weighted as 0% and will not affect students grades if it was downloaded from this article. You can confirm that it is weighted as 0% by viewing your Gradebook Setup.)

  • Ensure your restriction is set up where students Must match a Greater than or equal to grade of 100 in the Hypothesis Consent quiz.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save and Return to course"

You should now see a restriction added to your Hypothesis activity on your main course page. You can verify whether students are restricted from using the activity by switching your role to a student and attempting to use it (Click your name in the top-right corner, Switch role to, Student).

Restrictions must be configured this way for each Hypothesis activity that is added to a course. The Hypothesis Consent quiz only needs to be added to a course once.
