Grading by Item in Moodle
Dukewich, K. (n.d.) Grading by item [blog]. KPU Teaching and Learning Commons.
Here’s a tip to reduce the time and effort you put into marking written Essay questions using a feature in Moodle called Manual Grading, and the difference it makes is notable.
Manual Grading allows you to mark by question instead of by student, which dramatically reduces task-switching, and allows you to copy-and-paste feedback across students who make similar errors.
You can use this feature with the “Essay” question type in a Moodle Quiz:
- Enter Quiz > GEAR menu > Manual Grading
- ‘Essay’ Questions will automatically show up
- Select “Also show questions that have been graded automatically” if you have Short Answer questions that need marking
- Grade All > Set Questions per page: 35 > Set Order attempts: date – this will order your students in (approximately) decreasing competence
